Vesica
Piscis
Translated into the “vessel of the fish,”
the fish body signifying sacred geometry of two perfect circles
creating the pointed oval shape, which symbolizes immense power,
energy and the female vaginal form. In religious and mythological
art, a human depicted within the “Vesica Piscis” implied
a supernatural connection between the physical world and divine.
There are two versions to this sculpture. The
first, Vesica Piscis I, was an aquarium sculpture that included
50 aquatic animals: zebra fish, gourami kisser fish, and a snakefish.
Viewers were invited to lie on the cushion beneath the sculpture
and look up through the vesica form. From that viewpoint, the
viewer can observe the movements of the animals in the aquarium.
The viewer in this case was the human depicted within the Vesica
Piscis.
In the second sculpture, Vesica Piscis II,
the sculpture only included aquatic plants in the aquarium. As
more of a contemplative setting, the viewer could sit by the sculpture
and watch the motion of the plants from the ebb of the water as
it passed over the entire piece. The image of a woman represented
the feminine force behind the symbolism that the Vesica Piscis
historically represented in mythical or religious versions.
