Exhibition Bioreactors

Three Exhibition Bioreactors are the protective environments for the sculptures and are in the research stage. The bioreactors will function as self-contained environments that house tissue cultured art pieces, which are enabled to carry out their cellular life and death cycles during exhibition. A bioreactor emulates the conditions similar to the body’s state of homeostasis (physiological stability) and normal cell function. In a completely artificial setting, the simulation of gas, nutrient and waste exchanges are monitored and adjusted according to the age, pH levels and condition of the tissue culture specimens in their stages of development or decay.

The Exhibition Bioreactors are art pieces. Considering aesthetics of art/laboratory installation and the practicality of culturing three-dimensional tissue culture specimens, the display glass vessels will be customized according to my personal design preferences and biological functionality. Three bioreactors that exhibit diverse cellular activity during fluctuating life cycles are based on the same mechanical design that are composed of: the display glass vessel, its water jacket/heater, a magnetic drive for impeller rotation of the attached sculpture, electronic sensors to monitor biological changes, an exhaust condenser to control evaporation and a sterile outlet for liquid sample extraction.
